Our body needs many nutrients and elements to function in a harmonious and perfect way.

One of the most important vitamins and often overlooked is Vitamin D. Also known as "The Sunshine Vitamin" Vitamin D is essential for many processes, such as bone calcification, but is also able to act positively on eyes, heart, muscles, lungs and cell proliferation. Its lack causes serious disturbances to the body as chronic weakness, poor bone calcification and osteoporosi.

Intake of vitamin D can be through oral with food, but unfortunately this method is inefficient and can lead to deficiencies and imbalances. In fact, 80% of vitamin D is normally achieved through proper exposure to ultraviolet rays.

The most efficient system to promote the synthesis of vitamin D by part of our organism is exposure to ultraviolet rays. The UV rays in fact, either from the sun, and from other sources, stimulate the body in the production of the precious vitamin D, essential for the proper functioning of the human body. The invention of the ultraviolet lamps, now used for aesthetic purposes, took place in Germany, just to try to overcome the problem of lack of sun exposure and the consequent lack of vitamin D in children, so that danger of suffering from bone disorders like rickets.

How much vitamin D the body needs?

The need for vitamin D is not constant in time.
The quantities are approximate:
400 IU up to a year or so
600 IU up to adolescence
1500 IU for adults
2300 IU for older people (they also produce less Vitamin D)
1 IU = 0.025 mcg

The risk of Vitamin D deficiency

Lack of vitamin D can lead to serious disorders and diseases. During school age the first risk is rickets, while in adulthood remain some risks of hypertension, asthma, weak immune system.

It also seems that the
lack of vitamin D can affect the occurrence of diseases such as type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and the development of certain cancers (colon, prostate, lungs, lymphatic system, breast). Finally, the lack of vitamin D leads eye fatigue and insomnia.

How much vitamin D to be healthy?

A Mediterranean diet provides about 300 IU per day of vitamin D. The rest should be taken by exposure to UV light. The Sun, not filtered by glass, can provide enough vitamin D if you are exposed at least 15-20 minutes every day, at least 4 times a week at medium latitude. For tanning lamps, depending on the type, 2-4 sessions per month are generally sufficient.
